Learning Module: Spatial Data Collection Methods and their Uncertianty

Purpose

This module introduces students to using a GPS to collect data and how to compute the uncertainty of a GPS.

Learning Outcomes

• Collect data in the field with GPS, compass and range finder.
• Qualify field data including computing the uncertainty of the data
• Create maps and reports for field data

Activities

Go to "The USGS Store" on the web and download a topographic maps for "Arcata South" and "Arcata North". Examine these maps and be great to discuss what you see. Crop the map to the area around HSU and print it out. Also, download another topo for an area that you are familiar with. Bring these files to lab with you.

There is a new National Geographic web site that allows you do download PDFs of the USGS Topo Quads that fit on 8.5 x 11 inch paper.
